Four of my courses this semester use Illinois Compass, two of which use it strictly for publishing grades. Compass should have a feature of emailing me when my grades are updated. They already have the option of emailing you when you have new "Compass Messages," and they display on the front page when any grade is updated, so why can't we just combine the two features?
Seems like something all too obvious.

Excellent idea! While it may seem obvious, it might not be so for an already overtasked support staff person who may be juggling many complicated projects with multiple deadlines, a person that likely would love a suggestion like this and may be able to make it happen fairly easily; if not, at least it gets put on the "to-do list." I emailed edtech@uiuc.edu and will share any response. While we often think the University has massive resources available, sometimes things like this are handled by one or just a handful of people who would very much appreciate useful suggestions like this from students.
Here's the response:

HI Joel,
Thanks for passing the suggestion along. You may know that Compass is actually our local branding of a commercial product, "Blackboard Vista." As such, we don't directly modify the code here, but we DO pass along feature requests to the vendor, Blackboard. I know that they have been actively looking at issues related to better communication outside of the system, so it's possible this change is already under consideration. In any case, I will pass the idea along to them. Thank you.
